A Star is Born
Genre: Reality / 10 seasons / 210 episodes
Air dates: 2003 – Keshet, Channel 2.
“A Star is Born” evolved out of the game show “Don’t Stop Singing” aired in 2002 by Keshet and hosted by Zvika Hadar. In “Don’t Stop Singing” contestants competed alongside celebrities in identifying and singing Israeli songs. In 2003, “Don’t Stop Singing” became a singing competition. Throughout the various episodes, contestants would sing Israeli songs and receive scores based on their performance. Eventually, the home audience voted for their favorite singer via text messages from home. The contestant with the lowest number of votes would be removed from the show, and after several screenings, the final three would perform their songs live.
From its first season on, “A Star is Born” became a tremendous success, leading to a cultural phenomenon. In spite of the formidable criticism against “instant culture” and the “manufacturing of stars”, it has maintained high viewing ratings and massive audience approval in subsequent seasons.
